Dexpot doesn't start properly on Windows 7 x64

I've successfully used Dexpot on Vista Home Premium 64 bit without any problem, but recently I upgraded my computer and now for some reason, whenever I try to start Dexpot, a strange dialog pops up, trying to install "Roxio Easy Media Creator", followed by it telling me that a network file could not be found. Well I have no idea where the file in question is (it's some setup file for Roxio) so I press cancel and after that Dexpot does nothing. If I click the splash screen it disappears but nothing happens. Dexpot is running in the background (I can see it through the Task Manager) but it doesn't respond to any commands and its tray icon does not appear.

Anyone help me? I have no idea what could be causing this and I would rather avoid installing Roxio unless there is no choice.

Yes I have. I tried several times to no avail. I also uninstalled Roxio but that did not do any good - the only difference is that the dialog box no longer appears. Dexpot continues to run in the background but the tray icon does not appear and neither does any UI. I have also tried downgrading to a slightly older version (1.5.1) but that didn't do any good either.

I tried every option under Main Menu, including Settings but they all ended up the same way - a splash screen that disappears when you click it but nothing else.

Strange. Can you start Dexpot with command line switch "/debug" and then post the resulting log file here?

it looks like the VB6 Common Controls are not properly installed on your system. Run this setup and restart your PC if requested.

this probably won't hinder the Roxio installer from saying hello again.

I've had a similar issue with the Office installer some years ago that could only be fixed by installing and uninstalling it.

Thanks for all the help, but unfortunately that did not resolve the issue. The installer started and finished in less than two seconds, then prompted me to restart, which I did. But Dexpot still does not start up properly.

Hm, let's try it the manual way, just to be sure. Open a Command Prompt as administrator, then run the following command:

regsvr32 %windir%\SysWOW64\mscomctl.ocx

Well I've run into some other problems that may or may not be related. I was able to configure Dexpot for my hotkeys, Dexcube, Sevendex, etc, but if I restart my computer, those plugins get disabled and I have to manually reenable them myself through the settings menu. Also, the names I assigned to the desktops (Work 1, Work 2, etc) also are gone. The hotkeys are still there and I did save my settings into a profile.

Another more disturbing issue is that firefox cannot make any new windows! I can't tell for sure if this is a Firefox issue or not but it only started after I started using Dexpot again. I can't make new windows on any desktop, only a single one with all of my tabs. This is a rather big issue for me unfortunately.

When you upgraded;
Did you just run an upgrade from Vista to 7?
Or did you do a clean install of Windows 7?

It was an upgrade installation - I needed to preserve my programs and data, not to mention the fact that I didn't have a second hard drive working at the moment (one of them failed and I had to get it replaced) so backing up data and doing a clean install was out of the question.

Well the Firefox issue is fixed - my ZoneAlarm extension was causing the problem so I disabled it. Nonetheless, the other issues still persist - plugins don't load automatically, desktop names are lost, and Sevendex doesn't always show all four desktops.

I ran into a similar issue with my laptop, and have had some very serious issues.
The upgrade is not so much, it blends certain files, creates some, and hides others.
This has been the best and worst "Upgrade" experience I have ever had with Windows, but it is no where perfect to be sure :(
Understand that over time you are going to notice more and more odd behavior and anomalies

In order to over come what you are describing, and to get Dexpot to behave, here is what I had to do:
1) If you have Dexpot set to start on login. Turn this off in settings:

2) Log off and login, or better yet; restart your system.
3) Once Windows is completely up and running; Right click on Dexpot (wherever you launch it from) and Run as Administrator
4) Once Dexpot is up and running; Go back into settings and make what ever changes you require. Create a profile if you like, I did ;)
5) Re-Check the start with windows box in settings, if you start Dexpot with windows login.
6) log off and in again, or restart your system.
This corrected all the flaky issues I was having with Dexpot.
This is the operation I had to follow to get Dexpot to work as I needed it to work on an "Upgrade" system from Windows Vista to 7.

There is one other course of actions:
Install Dexpot in a folder that the Dexpot Core files are not UAC monitored.
I created a folder in C: call Program Files (Alternative). I use this file for self contained/Portable programs. It has the advantage of not being monitored by the UAC for Read/Write Operations, but will continued to be monitored by the UAC for operational actions.
Not so sure I suggest this course for the average individual, especially if you are using the UAC for a very secure system. Which I suggest for about 99% of my clients when I build them a custom system or do Tech Support for end users.

Nope
I had hoped that this would work for you as it has for me.
I have only really noticed these issues on upgraded systems, and not full installs.
Windows does something.....not right; in the upgrade :|

alright well thanks a lot for your help. I liked using Dexpot a lot because it was so feature rich and had a bit of eye-candy, which no other free program had, but if these plugins don't load I might have to switch to someone else... =(

Do the plugins get loaded automatically when you exit Dexpot manually and then restart it?

I just tried that. Opened Dexpot, enabled Dexcube and Sevendex, and restarted the program. Once again, both plugins were disabled.
